Challenges in Phytomedicine
Phytomedicine is focussing on the diverse effects of pest organisms on useful and ornamental plants. Primarily the negative impact of viral and fungal diseases as well as of insects on plant health has to be reduced to ensure productivity and sustainability of biological production systems.
To reach this goal the detrimental potential of pest organisms has to be characterized and interactions among environment, host plant, pest and natural enemies need to be analyzed.
Along with the identification and activation of the plant immume system the integration of mycorrhiza, natural enemies and biocides in biological control of pests is favored. Interactions among organisms are analyzed with classical methods as well as modern molecular and behavioral research approaches.
Resulting plant protection strategies are developed for greenhouse and field crops and cover forecasting as well as prevention and intervention measures. Besides that the potential impact of climate change on plant protection is considered and implement in required adaptation strategies.
